Hi, I'm Iris!

I am an artist-performer,
a modern ritualist
and a doula in training.

Life is too short to choose,
that’s why I like to cross-fuel my creations with the best of these 3 worlds.

I currently have spots available for my doula and bespoke ritual offerings.
Get in touch through the contact page to schedule an intake meeting.

Something is cooking and I can’t wait to share my newest ideas and creations with you.

Once and a while I share my musings via email in the form of a newsletter that’s supposed to feel like receiving a letter from a friend.

If you would like to receive them, sign up for it via the button in the top right corner or at the bottom of this page.

Would love to see you become a part of our circle!

λαμπάς β€’ λάμπω or lampΓ‘s β€’ lampō

December 10th 2023

December 10th 2023
@ Cemetry of Leuven (Leuven - B)
- A MOURNING RITUAL AT NIGHTFALL IN OPEN AIR -

Start: 18:00h
End: 20:00h

Artist Iris Carta created a mourning ritual in which you can make a candle together with others. The candle represents the light and love in which we remain connected to what we lost.

Curated by Barbara Raes/Beyond the Spoken, in collaboration with the Cemetery of Leuven.

β€œLampΓ‘s” means torch, lamp, beacon in Ancient Greek.
β€œLampō” means to shine, to be bright, to give light.

On the 10th of December, during the ritual of β€œlampΓ‘s β€’ lampō” you are given a heart of wax that you can melt and infuse with all your blessings for those you have lost. You pour it out in a circular shape as a symbol of unification. All circle discs are strung together to form a large candle. Connected in light and love. Finally, you will receive a bracelet made of wick. This represents the fire that burns within us forever.

On February the 2nd next year, during Candlemas (Maria Lichtmis) when the light returns, the candle will be lit together.

The 10th of December is Worldwide Candle Lighting Day (Wereldlichtjesdag) - the day on which candles are lit worldwide for deceased children - we create a shared torch that represents the light and love in which we remain connected to what we lost.
This ritual is curated by Barbara Raes of Beyond the Spoken, who invited me on this collaboration.
I feel very honored to be able to contribute to this moving ritual.

Please share this information with anyone who might benefit from it by sending a link.
You are very welcome to join us too.
Not only if you had a miscarriage or lost a child yourself, but also if you were close to a child that lost its life or even if you feel like somehow you lost the connection with your own inner child.
To me it is a healing ritual to be able to transform an inexplicable and transcendent pain of loss through an embodied action in which light is created from the deepest darkness.

Can't attend the ritual live but would like to participate anyhow?

Send me an email with:

1) Your name,

2) The name of the deceased child or the reason you want to participate in this ritual,

3) Your blessings.

I will then - in your name - melt a wax heart for you, will pour it into a circle with your blessings and will string the wax disc to the other parts of the collective candle in your name during the ritual.

Special thanks to Barbara Raes and the cemetery of Leuven for the collaboration.

I love to meet you face to face.

β€œA ritual is a physical form for what wants to be expressed, not only in words, but also with careful and symbolic actions. Rituals can help you to give meaning in both joyful and difficult moments in life.”

β€œArt is a powerful arena that invites you to reflect on life, renew your senses and maybe even envision a (better) future life. As an artist I aim for a language that immerses you in this space beyond the ordinary.”

A little throwback:

In the summer of 2021 I was invited by Deventer op Stelten (NL) to perform the tea ritual of TMBFT.
Forty tea rituals unfolded in unexpected, beautiful, fragile and empowering ways during these six days.
Never underestimate the power of tea ;)
